Dental Hygiene

Professional care for healthier teeth and gums

Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile. Regular dental hygiene appointments help prevent and manage gum disease by removing plaque and hardened tartar from areas that can be difficult to clean effectively at home.

At Veriam Dental, your hygiene care will be tailored to your individual needs. Alongside a professional clean, you will receive practical, personalised advice to help you care for your teeth and gums between visits.

Why Are Hygiene Appointments Important?

Plaque is a soft film of bacteria that continually forms on the teeth. If it is not removed effectively, it can harden into tartar, which cannot be removed through brushing alone.

A build-up of plaque and tartar can irritate the gums and contribute to gum disease. In its early stages, gum disease may cause redness, swelling or bleeding. Without appropriate care, it can progress and affect the tissues and bone supporting the teeth.

Regular hygiene appointments can help to:

  • Prevent and manage gum disease
  • Remove plaque and hardened tartar
  • Reduce staining caused by food, drinks and smoking
  • Improve the freshness and cleanliness of your mouth
  • Identify areas that require additional attention
  • Protect dental restorations and implants
  • Support the long-term health of your natural teeth

What Happens During a Hygiene Appointment

Your hygienist will assess the health of your gums and discuss any concerns you may have. Your teeth will then be carefully cleaned to remove deposits of plaque and tartar from around the teeth and gumline.

Surface staining may also be removed where possible before the teeth are polished, leaving your mouth feeling fresh and clean.

Your hygienist will explain any findings and provide advice tailored to your smile, which may include:

  • Brushing techniques
  • Cleaning between the teeth
  • Choosing suitable interdental brushes or floss
  • Caring for crowns, bridges, dentures or implants
  • Dietary and lifestyle advice
  • Managing areas that are difficult to clean

If signs of more advanced gum disease are identified, further assessment or a course of periodontal treatment may be recommended.

Signs of Gum Disease

Gum disease does not always cause pain, so it can be easy to overlook. Signs may include:

  • Bleeding when brushing or cleaning between the teeth
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Persistent bad breath or an unpleasant taste
  • Gums beginning to recede
  • Increased sensitivity around the gumline
  • Teeth becoming loose or changing position

If you have noticed any of these symptoms, please arrange an appointment so we can assess your gum health and recommend the appropriate care.

How Often Should I Visit The Hygienist?

The recommended frequency of hygiene appointments varies from person to person. Some patients may benefit from more frequent visits, particularly if they have gum disease, dental implants, extensive restorations or find certain areas difficult to clean.

Your dentist or hygienist will recommend an appointment schedule based on your individual oral health.

Gentle, Personalised Hygiene Care

We understand that sensitive teeth, tender gums or dental anxiety can make hygiene appointments feel daunting. Please let us know about any worries or sensitivity before treatment begins.

We will explain what to expect, work at a pace that feels manageable and adapt your care wherever possible to help you feel comfortable throughout your visit.

If treatment is recommended, you will receive a personalised plan outlining the available options, anticipated timescales and costs. There is no pressure to make an immediate decision—we want you to feel comfortable, informed and confident about your care.

Making Routine Care More Manageable

Dental hygiene appointments are included within selected Veriam Dental Plans, helping you spread the cost of maintaining your oral health through convenient monthly payments.
